WATERLOO – A Waterloo man who was found with a handgun during a traffic stop has pleaded to federal weapons charges.
Allan James Arceo, 24, pleaded to one count of felon in possession of a firearm in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. Sentencing will be at a later date and he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Authorities allege Arceo is barred from handling firearms because of a burglary conviction for entering a West Fourth Street garage in 2013.
Waterloo police found a .380-caliber Kimber handgun during a Jan. 1 traffic stop at West Third Street and Sullivan Avenue. Acreo was a front-seat passenger in the vehicle, and police allege he had removed the weapon from his waistband and placed it in the glove box before the traffic stop. according to court records.
Arceo is also awaiting trial on assault and criminal mischief charges for allegedly assaulting a woman outside her West First Street home and damaging Chrysler 300 passenger car on Aug. 19, 2017.
