WATERLOO -- Three people were wounded in two separate shootings Sunday.

It wasn’t clear if the shootings are related.

In the latest attack, which took place in the 100 block of Western Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Sunday, 21-year-old Juanrez Jefferson of Waterloo flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

As of Monday afternoon, he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery, according to police. Police said he was shot numerous times.

Details of the shooting weren’t immediately available, but several neighbors called 911 after hearing gunfire, said Capt. David Mohlis with the Waterloo Police Department. He said the injured man was taken to Covenant Medical Center by private vehicle.

The shooting happened outside, and a vehicle in the area was also struck by gunfire, Mohlis said.

Earlier on Sunday, at 12:37 a.m., residents in the 800 block of Beech Street called after hearing gunshots.

Officers found spent shell casings in the area, and two people showed up at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital with gunshot wounds moments later. He said 18-year-old Daeshon Wright of Waterloo had been shot in the right thigh, and a 17-year-old male had been shot in the right arm. Their injuries aren’t considered life threatening.
