DUNKERTON, Iowa — The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office is helping Dunkerton police investigate an incident involving a gun found on school property.
The weapon was reportedly recovered from a football player’s gym bag on the team bus Friday night after the Raiders returned from Riceville High School. The 18-year-old player has been suspended.
The gun and bag were turned over to authorities, Sheriff Tony Thompson said. An investigation is ongoing.
Dunkerton school administrators met with football players and their families Saturday to inform them about the situation.
School officials do not believe Dunkerton students are in danger but took precautions Tuesday when classes resumed after the holiday weekend. Students were not allowed outside for recess, physical education or other activities.
Following district policy, doors were locked during the day.
The district also provided extra supervision as students entered and exited the school and during activities. Thompson said sheriff’s deputies assisted Dunkerton police in providing additional security at Tuesday night athletic events.
