WATERLOO – A second person has been sentenced to probation in the 2014 burglary of a Waterloo church.

Taylor James Gray, 23, was sentenced to up to five years of probation during a Dec. 28 hearing in Black Hawk County District Court.

Gray pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree burglary and second-degree theft in connection with more than $1,000 worth of damage done to Burton Avenue Baptist Church in May 2014.

The sentence consisted of 10 years in prison for criminal mischief added to two concurrent five-year sentences for theft and burglary. The prison time was suspended to two to five year’s probation. He was also ordered to pay restitution, which will be determined later.

Authorities said Gray and others broke into the church, sprayed fire extinguisher in the building and took an overhead projector. He was arrested in 2016 in Colorado and returned to Iowa.

Another person charged in the crime, Jalan Culpepper, was arrested in Kansas in 2015 and was also sentenced to probation.
