CHARLES CITY -- A Minnesota man is accused of stealing a SUV from a Kwik Star in Charles City and leading police on a high-speed chase.
About 11:10 a.m. Friday, Charles City Police received a report of a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse stolen from the Kwik Star gas station located in the 1500 block of South Grand Avenue.
According to the criminal complaint, the SUV had the keys left inside the vehicle.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office located the SUV on Highway 218 southbound “due to the quick thinking of a deputy,” the Charles City Police Department said on their Facebook page.
The driver, later identified as Shawndell Smith, 22, of St. Paul, Minn., did not stop for the deputy and a high-speed chase ensued, police said.
Law enforcement deployed tire-deflation devices, stopping the vehicle.
Smith was arrested south of Janesville and was charged with felony second-degree theft. He is being held in the Floyd County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
