INDEPENDENCE – A Waterloo man has been sentenced to prison for robbing a motorist on Interstate 380 in 2016.

Eddie Lavar Wade, 38, was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for second-degree robbery. The sentence carries and five-year mandatory minimum, and Wade was also ordered to pay restitution.

The sentence came Tuesday, days after Wade returned from a furlough to travel to Chicago to attend his father’s funeral.

Authorities said Wade rear ended a Cedar Rapids resident on Interstate 380 in Buchanan County on Aug. 20, 2016. When they stopped to survey the damage, the 63-year-old driver was struck in the head with a tire iron or stick, and his wallet and cell phone were stolen. The victim had a cut on his forehead that required five stitches to close.

Wade was detained a short time later in Black Hawk County.
