CEDAR RAPIDS | A Dike insurance agent has been charged with allegedly creating fake policies to inflate her commissions.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa charged Melissa Ilene Williams with one count of mail fraud in an information that was filed Friday. Arraignment is scheduled for March 3 in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Williams, 46, was a licensed life insurance agent, and authorities allege that between July 2011 and January 2012 she used the names of real people to submit bogus life insurance applications to companies she worked for. She then received commissions for the sales, court records state.

The scheme included forging the names of the policy holders on the documents. Williams also paid the initial premiums to cover her tracks, records state.
