Film talk session

CEDAR FALLS — There will be a “Film: Talk” session at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Will Hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

The discussion will be on the 2013 film “Philomena,” which follows a journalist who picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, taken away from her decades earlier.

There are several copies available in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls public libraries and it is on Netflix online.

Tony Brown

concert slated

WATERLOO — The Tony Brown Band will perform live at the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ final RiverLoop Rhythms concert of the season from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Amphitheatre. Admission is free with food and beverages available for purchase.

Tony Brown and his band play a mix of R&B, reggae and soul.

Brawlers looking

for new skaters

WATERLOO — The Cedar Valley Roller Derby Push-Up Brawlers team is looking for potential skaters for the new season.

An informational recruitment meeting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Waterloo Convention Center at the 5 Sullivan Brothers Plaza.

It will be an opportunity for those interested in joining the team to learn how the training process is conducted, meet teammates and ask questions, and have the opportunity to practice skating. Attendees who presently own skates are encouraged to bring them.

Anyone who identifies as female and is 18 years or older are encouraged and allowed to skate with the Brawlers, though anyone older than 18 may train to be a part of the referee crew or non-skating officials.

The league also has a junior team, the Mad Catters, who have just started their next session for those who are interested in the sport but are underage.

Open house set

at West Music

CEDAR FALLS — The Northeast Area Music Teachers Association will host an open house for all area piano teachers at 9 a.m. Sept. 16  at the West Music Store, 6322 University Ave.

Teachers can have a cup of coffee and snacks, meet the members of NAMTA and learn about the benefits of the organization.

NAMTA is part of the Iowa Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association.

CF students

to be honored

CEDAR FALLS — The Cedar Falls American Legion Auxiliary Unit 237 will sponsor a dinner Monday to honor the Cedar Falls High School students who were delegates to the 2017 American Legion girls and boys state camps.

Girls who participated were Sylvia Brown, Abby Lures and Clare Rolinger, and boys were Arlo Hettle, Charles Potter-Wehr, Jacob Keagle and Will Burken.

The dinner will start at 5 p.m. at the AMVETS Post at 1934 Irving St.

Vision support

group to meet

WATERLOO — The Macular Degeneration/Low Vision Support Group will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday in the board room of Kimball Ridge Center, Kimball and Ridgeway avenues.

Rebecca Barrionuevo of Cedar Falls will share her triumphs and challenges, living with low vision for many years. All are welcome.
