WATERLOO, Iowa --- Columbus Catholic High School has chosen Jake Schaefer as its 2012 distinguished alumnus of the year.

Schaefer, of Waterloo, attended St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School and is a 1998 graduate of Columbus. He earned an associate's degree from Hawkeye Community College and a bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University in public administration.

Schaefer works for the city of Waterloo as Young Arena's recreational specialist. He has served two terms on the Cedar Valley Catholic School Board and is a member of the CVCS finance committee as well as the Blessed Maria Assunta Pallotta building committee. He is an active volunteer in the school system, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order Of Foresters Court No. 1234, and St. Edward Church.

Schaefer and his wife, Carrie, have two children, Sawyer and Spencer. Sawyer attends preschool at St. Edward School.
