CEDAR FALLS -- Cedar Falls Utilities has been honored for its example among municipal utilities in promoting energy efficiency to its customers. The utility recently received a Leadership in Energy Efficiency Award at the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities Leadership 2014 Conference.

CFU exceeded its energy-efficiency goals in the period of 2010-12 and did so through various customer programs.

Among activities employed by the utility were using an aerial thermal imaging program -- infrared photos taken from an airplane -- to identify opportunities for residents to improve energy efficiency within their homes; working with the Green Iowa Americorps program on residential energy audits and weatherization programs; investment in customer energy-efficient lighting; participation in IAMU’s 2 Degrees 2 Save Program, which employs “smart” remotely adjustable thermostats; implementation of an automated meter reading system; and ongoing development of a time-of-use pricing structure for utility customers.
