NEW HAMPTON (AP) - A Chickasaw County sheriff's deputy has shot and killed a tiger that escaped from its cage.

Sheriff Martin T. Larsen says his office received a call that a tiger was free and attacking a dog at the Joseph and Dawn Schmitt farm.

When the sheriff and two deputies arrived, the full-grown tiger was attacking the family dog.

He says the dog, a collie, was rushed to a vet and is doing OK.

Larsen says the county doesn't have any licensing laws for exotic pets and the matter has been turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which regulates exotic pets.

The family also has two cougars and a bear.
