Cheeky, fun and sophisticated, trend-setting pink isn’t just for little girls or old aunties anymore.
Pink is a happy, hopeful, grown-up color that spans the spectrum from barely-there blush to bold-as-you-please fuschia, and the color is showing up on walls, fabrics and accessories for the home.
“We’ve been missing pink for a while. We’ve seen blips – fuschias and other pinks – in the past, but the color hasn’t taken hold as much as it has now. We have three different pinks in our 2016 color forecast,” says Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing.
Jordan says pink can take home interiors in different directions. Make it masculine by pairing the right shade of pink with contrasting or complementary colors, for example. “Pair it with glossy black or charcoal gray, and the look is very modern and strong. It looks great with deep espressos and chocolate browns, and I love pinks with greens, either a true green or the yellowish side of green. Think about a pink flower with green foliage … it works in nature.”
Paired with orange, pink makes an energetic statement. Pink, ivory and raspberry make a lively combo, or on the soft side, choose a blush color and play it against chic whites, off-whites, ivories, taupes or other neutrals.
“You may not want to paint the whole room pink, but pain a feature wall. Splash a bold fuschia on the wall and hang black-and-white framed photography on it for a contemporary, stunning design feature,” Jordan suggests.
Hot pink makes food appear more appetizing in the dining room, color experts note, and its softer shades are complexion-flattering for bedrooms. A warm shade of pink can visually warm a north-facing room, too. Why not paint all the doors down a long, boring hallway in a deep pink, or give old furniture a new lease on life with a pop of pink. A bright pink ceiling against dark or pale walls is an attention-getter, too.
If you’re one of those “a little goes a long way” people, look for pink mixed into gender-neutral fabric and wallpaper patterns, artwork and accessories.
