GRUNDY CENTER - Wayne Eldon Fonken, 85, of Carbondale, Colo., formerly of Grundy Center, died Sunday, Aug. 8, at his home.
He was born May 3, 1925, in Grundy Center, son of Walter and Grace Kluver Fonken. He married Betty Flickinger Dec. 3, 1950, in Independence.
He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1943. Mr. Fonken joined the U.S. Navy and served on the Destroyer USS Foote DD511 as part of the Little Beaver squadron in the South Pacific. After the war ended, he worked with his father at Walter's Oil Co., and drove the school bus for Grundy Public Schools. He owned and operated Massco Janitorial Supply Co. in Carbondale, Colo., and was employed by Wal-Mart for almost 20 years.
Survived by: his wife, Betty; two daughters, Beth Anne (Jeff) and Wendy (Pierre); two sons, John and Jeff; and three granddaughters.
Preceded in death by: a grandson.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery, both in Grundy Center. Military service conducted by the Grundy Center American Legion Post 349 and AMVETS 17. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
