INDEPENDENCE -- L. John Flage, MD, 82, of Independence, died at home Saturday, Dec. 7.
He was born July 31, 1931, in Allamakee County, son of Harvey Arthur and Hazel Helen Henry Flage. On Feb. 21, 1962, he married Mary Margaret Mitchell in Torrance, Calif., and they later divorced. On March 10, 1979, he married Karen Ann Severson Gremmert at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
He graduated from high school in Waukon in 1950; from the University of Dubuque in Dubuque in 1957, and the University of Iowa School of Medicine, Iowa City, in 1962. He practiced medicine in Independence for 45 years, retiring in 1999. While in college, Dr. Flage worked for the U.S. Park Service during the summers at Yosemite National Park, Calif. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the Signal Corps in Japan. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, and was past president of the Independence Rotary Club.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Craig (Kim) of Zeeland, Mich.; two daughters, Stephanie (Jesse) Holt of Kansas City, Mo., and Ann Flage of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.; two stepsons, Scott (Susan) Gremmert of Redmond, Wash., and Mark (Jennifer) Gremmert of Centennial, Colo.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Mary Erickson of Rogers, Ark.; and a sister-in-law, LeeOtia Flage of Waukon.
Preceded in death by: his parents; and a brother, Kenneth.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with committal services at Cremation Garden at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, Independence.
