WATERLOO — John Leon Sproles, 80, of Waterloo, died Monday, Feb. 18, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center following a long illness.
He was born Jan. 26, 1933, to Buddy and Hazel Coleman Sproles. He married Katie C. Wade on Sept. 15, 1951. He married Helen Sanders on Oct. 31, 1958. He then married Mary Prymer on May 17, 1965. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Sproles attended Richland Vocational School, Pickens, Miss., then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, earning several medals. He then moved to Waterloo and went to work at John Deere Tractor Works. He was a member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, usher and was a member of the men’s chorus.
Survived by: seven sons, John Arthur Sproles of Chicago, Lonnie (Marsha) Sproles, Dion (Darlene L.) Sproles and Tommy Anderson, all of Waterloo, Monty L. Sproles of Haltom City, Texas, Larry D. Sproles of Lenexa, Kan., and Efonda L. Sproles of Minnetonka, Minn.; four daughters, Linda Delaney Johnson of Aurora, Ill., Mary Williams (Sheldon) of Cincinnati, Jacqueline (Alto) Haley of Goodman, Miss., and Joann (Thomas) McClellan of Southfield, Mich.; 36 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Connie.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Full military rites will be conducted at the church by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and for an hour before services Saturday, all at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is assisting the family.
