JESUP -- James D. Vogel, 92, of Jesup, died Friday, Nov. 10, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence.
He was born July 22, 1925, near Brandon in Buchanan County, son of Sylvester George “Wes” and Esther Catherine McDonald Vogel. On June 3, 1950, he married Elaine Margaret Oswald at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waterloo. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2012.
He graduated from Jesup High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946, including a tour in Germany. Jim was an office clerk at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo and also farmed before his retirement. He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 and Knights of Columbus Council 8227 in Jesup.
Survived by: five sons, Steven (Connie) of Jesup, Joseph (Kris) and Pat, both of Waterloo, Tim (Cindy) of Gilbertville, and Marty (Rhonda) of Blairstown; six daughters, Sherri Schmitt of Waterloo, Margaret “Peggy” (David) Gilchrist of Urbandale, Beth Augustine of Waterloo, Ann (Lowell) Fenner of Iowa City, Nancy (Neil) Steege of Newhall, and Barb (Harry) Murtha of Victor; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Mary) of Independence; a sister, Eileen Splinter of Camarillo, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Ann Vogel of Oelwein; and a brother-in-law, Myron Oswald of Harpers Ferry.
Preceded in death by: his parents; four great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Steven Schmitt; and a brother, John.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
