WATERLOO — Henry Lester Roby, 72, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 8, at Manor Care Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.
He was born July 26, 1945, in Goodman, Miss., to Roosevelt Roby and Mabel Sallis. He married Earnestine McCullen in Waterloo, and they later divorced. He then married Bertha Dee Bush on May 22, 1993, in Waterloo.
Henry was employed by Swift Co., and he later was a trucker for Warren Transport for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.
Survived by: his wife, Bertha; his father, Roosevelt Roby of Waterloo; his mother, Mabel Bradfield of Waterloo; a daughter, Tammy (Jerome) Stanford of Waterloo; three stepdaughters, LaTarsha Bush of Milwaukee, Glenda (Ervin) Reynolds of Denver, Colo., and Kimberly McCullen of Charleston, Ill.; three sons, William Butler, William (Kia) Campbell and Lance (Phaedra) Roby, all of Waterloo; a stepson, Gregory Bush of Milwaukee; three brothers, Padro Hayes of Des Moines, Anthony “Tony” Bradfield and Ricky Bradfield, both of Waterloo; and 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Roosevelt “Bep” Roby; his stepmother, Amanda Roby; and his stepfather, Sammie Bradfield.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Payne AME Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo, with full military rites by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church on Newell Street, with a 6 p.m. Knights of Pythias service. Sanders Funeral Service is assisting the family.
