CLARKSVILLE — Dwane Edward Hilmer, 91, of Clarksville, formerly of Dent, Minn., Brandon and Hudson, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Dysart, son of Edward Eldo and Mary Ellen Walker Hilmer. He married Maxine Isabella Poulter on July 3, 1945, at the United Brethren Church in Hudson. She preceded him in death Jan. 6, 2006.
Dwane was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a military policeman in Anchorage, Alaska, during World War II. Dwane and Maxine farmed in the Brandon area for 17 years. They later owned and operated Hilmer’s Haven Resort in Detroit Lakes, Minn., for 25 years and then Hilmer Haven Campgrounds for five years in Detroit Lakes until retiring in 1993.
Survived by: four sons, Dean (Vicky) of Waverly, Gary (Debbie) of Rochester, Minn., Rick (Arlene) of Wickenburg, Ariz., and David (Jan) of St. Peters, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a niece, Debbie (Denny) Stancel of Atkins.
Preceded in death by: his parents; and a sister, Betty Jean Slager.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at La Porte City Funeral Home, La Porte City, with burial in West View Cemetery, with full military honors by USS San Diego American Legion Post of La Porte City. Visitation will be for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
