WATERLOO -- Dr. Arthur W. Devine, 88, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Sept. 8, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

He was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Bancroft, son of John A. and Lillian Murray Devine. He married Marilyn K. Glentzer on Oct. 30, 1947, in Iowa City. She died July 20, 1996.

Dr. Devine served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. He received his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University, Ames, graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, and did an internship in Cleveland, Ohio. He did his surgical residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. He practiced surgery in Waterloo for 30 years, and until recently, stayed active in medicine, working for the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station, Sun City West, Ariz. He was a member of the Black Hawk County Medical Society, Iowa Medical Society, American Medical Association and American College of Surgeons.

Survived by: a son, Dr. Bill (Patricia) Devine of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Kathy (Paul) Fishman of Mequon, Wis., and Ann (Gary) Devine-King of Morgantown, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Kate (Jess) Vilsack, Christina (Josh) McClure, Josh Devine-King, Colleen Devine-King, Anne (Ryan) LaFlamme and Dr. Matt Fishman; three great-grandchildren, Jake and Ella Vilsack, and Andrew LaFlamme; a brother, John (Mirga) of Naples, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Goodenow of Columbus, Ohio.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, Emmett, Kenneth and Tom; and a sister, Mary Elaine Sexton.

Memorial services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials in lieu of flowers: may be directed to Allen Hospital Foundation, Waterloo or St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation, Cedar Rapids.
