CEDAR FALLS — Bruce M. Smith, 98, of Cedar Falls died at home Wednesday, Feb. 7.
He was born June 11, 1919, in Waterloo, son of Carl and Nellie Simmons Smith. He married Betty J. Christensen on April 30, 1945, in El Paso, Texas. She preceded him in death Jan. 11, 2005.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and French Legion of Honor medal for his service. He was a self-employed home builder and contractor, retiring in 1980. He was a Mason and served as past president of Home Builders Association of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, NE Iowa Subdividers Association and the Cedarloo Sertoma Club.
He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
Survived by: three sons, Ken (Twyla) Smith of Longmont, Colo., and Steve (Bonnie) Smith and Jim (Pam) Smith, both of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Donna (Rick) Barta and Julie (Mike) Michalicek, both of Cedar Falls; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren plus one on the way; and a brother, Roger (Velma) Smith of Big Fork, Minn.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Paul and Max Smith; two sisters-in-law, Eva and Muriel Smith; and a nephew, Kirk Smith.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with burial in Alcock Cemetery in Frederika. Military honors will be conducted by the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 Honor Guard and the Iowa Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail. Visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Richardson Funeral Service and also for an hour before the service at the church.
