PARKERSBURG — Bernice Frances Freemon, 89, of Waverly, formerly of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Dec. 2, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes.
She was born May 5, 1928, in Butler County, daughter of Corneil and Grace Meinders Hovenga. On Oct. 16, 1954, she married Lavern Grant Freemon at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1991.
She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1947. While living in Waterloo, Bernice worked at Montgomery Ward. After moving to Parkersburg, Bernice owned a ceramic shop and also taught ceramic classes. In 2004, she moved to Bartels Retirement Community in Waverly.
She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg and the Sunshine Circle of the church. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Parkersburg.
Survived by: a brother, Donald (LaVonne) Hovenga of Grinnell; a sister, Elizabeth (Dean) Deuell of Allison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: her parents.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Christian Reformed Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday before services at the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg is in charge of arrangements.
