CVCS Distinguished Alums recognized
WATERLOO — Cedar Valley Catholic Schools is honoring distinguished alumni and celebrating its educational institutions during Catholic Schools.
Registration for the 2018-19 school year is under way at Blessed Sacrament, Sacred Heart and St. Edward elementary schools. Contact one of the schools or CVCS offices at 232-1422 for more information. Details can also be found at www.cvcatholic.org/registration.
Columbus and the three elementary schools are honoring distinguished alumni.
Rose Quirk has been selected as the 2018 distinguished alum of Columbus Catholic High School. The 1975 graduate’s family donated two houses in 1981 to help meet the needs of the homeless in Waterloo. The two houses became the Catholic Worker House. Ever since, Quirk has been heavily involved with the Catholic Worker House and other local charitable organizations.
Mary Sandberg has been selected as distinguished alum of Sacred Heart School. Sandberg was baptized at Sacred Heart, as been a lifelong member of the parish and attended Sacred Heart School. She has been actively involved in the parish serving on numerous councils and committees. She was also an active volunteer in the school for a number of years.
Tom O’Leary has been selected as distinguished alum of Blessed Sacrament School. O’Leary is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School and Columbus Catholic High School. His wife, Sue, and children Ryan and Holly are also Blessed Sacrament School and Columbus Catholic High School alumni. He has been an active, lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament parish and has volunteered at numerous school events, helped build the Blessed Sacrament softball field, and currently serves as sacristan at the school liturgies.
Mary Cushing has been selected as the distinguished alum of St. Edward School, which she attended through eighth grade before going on to Columbus. Cushing has taught in Waterloo Catholic schools for 39 years, beginning her career in 1979 at St. John-St. Nicholas Catholic School in Waterloo and Evansdale. She is proud to have taught at St. Mary’s, Queen of Peace, Blessed Sacrament and is currently teaching at Sacred Heart School. Mary and her husband, Dave raised two children, Sarah and Matthew, who also attended Waterloo Catholic schools.
