The Cedar Falls-Waterloo branch of the American Association of University Women named Rosy Say Mue and Christina Maree Yar as this year’s textbook scholarship recipients.
Both are full-time, first-year students at Hawkeye Community College. Despite renting some books and sharing others with friends, each student still had textbook expenses of more than $300 for the fall 2017 semester.
Maree Yar plans to be a nurse, and Say Mue is exploring several majors.
The recipients were nominated by Mallory Petsche of EMBARC and Sheila Houston, ELL teacher and counselor at Waterloo West High School.
AAUW CF-Wloo provides up to three awards each year to assist outstanding refugee women attending postsecondary institutions in the Cedar Valley by defraying the cost of textbooks.
The first award was given last year to Hsae Meh, now a sophomore social work major at UNI.
