WATERLOO — Herbert F. Ludwig will celebrate his 100th birthday with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Friendship Village Social Lounge, 600 Park Lane, Waterloo.
He was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Oyens to Mike and Mary (Mae Kestel) Ludwig. He married Agnes Ryan of LeMars on April 29, 1943; she died Dec. 14, 2012.
He graduated from WestMar College in LeMars in 1941. Following college he moved to Waterloo and worked at Rath Packing Co. He joined the Navy and attended the Training Center in Chicago where he took navigation courses and graduated as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Herb spent three years in the Pacific during World War II and was discharged from the Navy as a lieutenant. Following his discharge, he returned to Rath’s until he and Agnes started farming south of Waterloo on Hess Road. Herb and Agnes retired from farming after more than 50 years and moved to Friendship Village in May 2001.
Hosting the event will be his family, Linda Ludwig, Anne and Leslie Ludwig of San Francisco, Leah and Bob Ladley of Eustis, Fla., Lois and Bob Snyder of Green Bay, Wis., and Jane and Mark Martin of Sioux Falls, S.D. There are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
