CEDAR FALLS – UNI Catering & Events, the campus caterer for the University of Northern Iowa, won first place for its pork entry at the 2018 Beers To You And Gourmet Too event held Jan. 28 at the Waterloo Convention Center in downtown Waterloo.

The winning pork entry was a slider that consisted of pork butt rubbed in cajun seasoning injected with Breckenridge Mango Mosaic American Pale Ale with touches of bay leaf, orange peel and liquid smoke and topped with mango chipotle slaw. Chef Rob Hamilton led the culinary team in creating the winning combination.

HCC to host

agriculture talk

WATERLOO — Hawkeye Community College will host a lecture on community supported agriculture from noon to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in Tama Hall on Hawkeye’s main campus, 1501 E. Orange Road.

Rob Faux of Genuine Faux Farm in Tripoli will discuss how a community supported agriculture system functions, what it means to farm organic and the farm-to-table food movement. Participants are welcome to bring a sack lunch. There is no cost to attend and the public is welcome.

This event is the first in a new lecture series organized by the Hawkeye Community College Honors Program.

CALMAR — The Northeast Iowa Community College Calmar campus will host a construction trades and transportation career event at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilder Business Center.

In addition to learning about local employment and training options, in-demand careers and earning potential, attendees have the opportunity to learn more about some of the career pathway certificates that the college offers.

Programs in the construction trades and transportation include Building Construction, Construction Equipment Operator and Commercial Driver’s License.

Omega joins

WATERLOO — Omega Cabinetry is the latest Cedar Valley business to ink a sponsorship deal with the Waterloo Career Center housed in Central Middle School. This partnership with the custom cabinetry manufacturer will enhance learning opportunities for high school students who pursue career pathways offered at the center, including Advanced Manufacturing and Sustainable Construction and Design.

Omega is one of many local companies committing to career program partnerships with Waterloo Schools. Recently, the University of Northern Iowa College of Education, John Deere Waterloo Operations and UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital were announced as sponsors for the career center.

WATERLOO – UnityPoint Health-Waterloo, a designated Blue Zones Worksite, will host Downshift: Stress Management in the Workplace, a breakfast and networking event from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Feb. 20 at UnityPoint Health-Prairie Parkway, 5100 Prairie Parkway, Cedar Falls.

The event is free for business leaders, HR professionals or wellness champions from Blue Zones’ designated businesses in the Cedar Valley. A light breakfast will be served.

Amanda Schara, LMHC, CADC, from the Allen Hospital Employee Assistance Program will discuss stress management and work/life balance. Nazee Jabbari, MD, medical director at Allen Occupational Health, will share expertise on the role of stress in chronic diseases and workplace injuries and invite attendees to share their experiences.

CEDAR FALLS — Standard Golf Co., a leading manufacturer and global marketer of golf course accessories, will transfer 100 percent ownership of the company to its employees via an Employee Stock Ownership Plan effective Jan. 3, 2018.

ESOP Partners, an ESOP consulting and administration firm in Appleton, Wis., assisted with the sale and will continue to work with the company as the ESOP consultant and third-party administrator.
