Mistakes aside, C.F. makes it 12 straight over West

CEDAR FALLS --- The two coaches threw in a few wrinkles.
That fit. Very little about Friday's installment of the annual Waterloo West-Cedar Falls battle seemed smooth.
At the end of more than a few missed opportunities, shifts in fortune, busted plays and shrill whistles, the Tigers beat the Wahawks, 14-0, at the UNI-Dome.
It was Cedar Falls' 12th straight win in the series and fifth in six games this year. To Pat Mitchell, very little about it seemed neatly tucked and pressed, and that didn't matter much to him.
"I had no idea it was going to be like this," the Tigers' co-head coach said. "I'll tell you --- about everything in football happened at one time or another. It was one of those games with a lot mistakes. But both teams fought through them. It was a good, tough ballgame right to the end."
Cedar Falls quarterback Kyle Bernard scored the only two touchdowns of the night. On the Tigers' second offensive series, Bernard darted right on a keeper, cut back to the left and picked up a wicked downfield block by Austin Long. The 82-yard touchdown run came with 2 minutes, 23 seconds to go in the opening quarter.
Late in the game, Bernard added an insurance score on a 9-yard dash with 54 ticks remaining.
With rushing leader Jay Brummel playing with an injury, the Tigers decided to adjust and use Bernard more as a ballcarrier. He finished with 122 yards in 10 tries, including a pair of kneel-downs at game's end.
"The injury thing made things happen," Mitchell said. "We tried to get another little factor in there --- another little weapon. (Bernard) runs well. He's a good high hurdler in track and a good high jumper. We tried to get one more thing going."
Between Bernard's TDs, the Tigers failed to score. Penalties ripped apart two second-half threats, and Cedar Falls also missed a field goal at end of the opening 24 minutes.
West coach Stan Wienke gave a nod to his revamped defense. The Wahawks scrapped their old set after giving up 38 points a week ago to Cedar Rapids Xavier.
"Last week the defense was terrible so we put in a whole new one," said Wienke after West dropped to 3-3 overall. "Tonight, our defense was pretty good. I was proud of our defense."
Offensively, West rotated Jud Wienke and Ryan Edwards at quarterback. The Wahawks never reached the end zone, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
Three times in the first half, West marched into Cedar Falls' territory. The best threat ended with a blocked field goal.
After halftime, though, the Wahawks couldn't regain their stride. They collected just three first downs and 31 yards in the last two quarters against the Tiger defense.
"We just played harder in the second half," Cedar Falls co-head coach Brad Remmert said. "They had a good plan in the first half against us. They were able to complete some passes and run the ball on first down. That was the big thing in the second half. We stopped them on first down."
Cedar Falls played Friday without injured tight end Darion Howard and several other Tigers were wounded. Yet, they prevailed.
"I'm proud of these youngsters," Mitchell said. "We got a few people chipped up and hurting a little bit. We had a lot of guys who stepped up."
Wienke voiced some frustration with a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct flags in the final seconds. But West's head coach found some things to like as well.
"They know how hard they've got to play to be good, and they showed really good signs of that," Wienke said. "We were upset because we opened our mouths at the end, and that's not to be tolerated."
West also lost Jeremy Wright to an injury Friday. The linebacker was taken to a local hospital following a first-half collision.
